METAHEROES
RYSLIG
Robin is an avid learner. She is a polyglot, who teaches herself new languages for fun. She plays a game with herself where she will read classic literature once in English, and then read it again in the original language to test how well she’s picked up Italian, French, etc. Her nosy nature and her love of languages is what first got her involved in the Hawkins gang’s shenanigans, in the summer before her senior year. At first, she was content to spend her time making sarcastic, cutting comments about how much Steve sucks— a position she held without actually knowing anything about him other than the fact that he was popular, he was a jock, and he was the guy her first crush was interested in. But as soon as she overheard Steve and Dustin listening to a Russian recording, her intellectual curiosity kicked in, and she made it her mission to not only teach herself Russian but also find out what the secret behind the coded message was. Dustin and Steve were hesitant at first, but she showed them how dedicated she was to the mission, and talked them into letting her help.
Robin is good at talking people into things. After the mall burned down and they could no longer work at Scoops Ahoy, she and Steve applied to get jobs at Family Video instead. The manager, a classmate of theirs named Keith, hired Robin on the spot because of her deep knowledge of and appreciation for film but rejected Steve due to his lack of committed attitude and more pedestrian tastes. (The guy didn’t even remember there was more than one Star Wars movie!) Robin took Keith aside and reminded him that even though Steve was a dingus, he was a total chick magnet, and his popularity among Hawkins’ teenage girls would drive them to the video rental store in droves, thereby persuading Keith to give Steve the job after all.
Months earlier, Robin would have dismissed Steve the same way Keith did, falling prey to the "us versus them" dichotomy of Hawkins high, and the lack of understanding that she (an outcast nerd) had of Steve (a popular jock), and vice versa. She kept herself at arms’ length from Steve (and everyone else), hiding the truth that her resentment of him was fueled by jealousy over her crush only having eyes for him, and not her. It was her usual defense mechanism, after witnessing the horrible things that close-minded Hawkinsites would do to people they suspected of being homosexual, or in any way outside the norm. However, throughout their harrowing experiences over the summer, Robin was able to learn from her misjudgment and come around to see that Steve was actually a great guy, who would go to great lengths not only to help but to protect the people close to him. She confided in him that she was gay, and to her surprise, he was actually chill about it, which further cemented her trust in him. In the ensuing months, she grew to care enough about him that she would go to bat for him against Keith’s initial reservations, using her persuasion skills to Steve’s advantage.
Although she is good at seeking out in-roads to talk people into letting her do things, Robin can be absurdly and awkwardly bad at picking up on social cues. It doesn’t occur to her that Steve has a crush on her until he makes it blatantly, plainly obvious, at which point she turns him down as gently as she can. She doesn’t sugarcoat bad news at all, partly because she is a pessimist, and partly because it doesn’t occur to her to think about how other people might feel to hear every obstacle that lies in their path laid out before them. She plays out how she expects conversations to go ahead of time, such as when the gang was preparing to face Eddie with the news that they had found Vecna. After a brief mention of the good news (they bought him junk food and beer), Robin begins to expound at length and in great detail upon all the bad news, that Vecna is in the Upside Down, the door to which has been closed, leaving them with no way of reaching him, thereby completely screwing over Eddie’s chances at clearing his name. Meanwhile, Nancy, who is much more level-headed and much better at anticipating and intuiting people’s feelings, suggests that they say, “We’re one step closer to finding Vecna,” and leave it at that, so as not to drown Eddie in hopelessness.
As evidenced by the last point, Robin often doesn’t know what to say in sensitive situations, leading her to ramble and spout out every thought that comes to her mind. She can go on tangents, floating from one topic to the next, from discussing their investigation into the murders in Hawkins, to making guesses as to Nancy’s intentions in pursuing Victor Creel as a lead, to begging Nancy to tell her whether she’s pissing her off by running off at the mouth— all the while never ceasing to run off at the mouth. Her motormouth and lack of filter are a self-fulfilling prophecy, a flaw that she is well aware of, and yet seemingly unable or unwilling to do anything about, even though it clearly sets people on edge. She does what she can to relieve the tension with awkward jokes and desperate reassurances before she inevitably gets distracted and goes off in a different direction.
Robin will spill her every waking thought willingly, carelessly, and often, but she doesn’t confide in many people about her inner life, her hopes and dreams. She has hopes and dreams— has many of them, actually, great, lofty ones— but she keeps them close to her chest. While she had close friends in elementary in middle school, they had drifted apart by the time they reached high school. As a sophomore, Robin isolated herself from her marching band friends, instead seeking out the company of a like-minded teacher, Mr. Hauser. She started eating lunch in Mr. Hauser’s classroom instead of in the cafeteria, and they talked about anything and everything, from literature to movies, to Robin’s desire to leave Hawkins and travel to Paris— something she had creatively dubbed "Operation Croissant." Mr. Hauser tried to be a mentor to Robin, encouraging her to let her peers in on her plans so that she wouldn’t be jet-setting alone and unsafe, but the only person she wanted to trust was Mr. Hauser himself. She assumed that because she saw her former friend Barb talking privately with Mr. Hauser shortly before Barb disappeared, Mr. Hauser had helped her run away somehow. In truth, Barb and Mr. Hauser were talking because Barb had uncovered Mr. Hauser’s secret, that he was gay and in a relationship with another man. Robin had been so convinced of what she believed to be true, of the ideal version of events that she had constructed in her mind, that she completely missed the fact that her friend and mentor was the only (other) gay person she had ever met.
Robin’s insatiable curiosity can lead to her asking too many questions at inopportune times, or asking them so incessantly that it drives people away from her. Even Mr. Hauser, who at one point was one of Robin’s closest allies, can be annoyed and put off by her unceasing questions, prying into his social life outside of school hours. Arguably, Robin’s life would have been a whole lot safer (albeit less interesting), had her dogged curiosity not gotten her involved in the Scoops Troop’s investigation into the Russian message. She doesn’t regret it, though, as she had always been dreaming of living a more adventurous life. It’s just that she thought that life of adventure would only be possible outside of Hawkins, and she never envisioned that it would be so dangerous. Still, uncovering the secrets lying beneath Hawkins’ polished exterior has given Robin a purpose and direction in her life that she was sorely lacking.
