MULTIVERSAL MUSEUM
Stepping into the Robin Buckley exhibit is like stepping back in time. Not too far back, just to 1986. The exhibit is set up like a 1980's era video rental store, the walls lined with rows of white shelves full of VHS tapes, interspersed with large illuminated movie posters for films like The Wiz, Goonies, and St. Elmo's Fire. The ceiling is adorned with a green awning with orange lettering displaying the name: Family Video. Interspersed throughout the exhibit are larger than life cardboard standees of famous 1980s movie stars in their biggest roles: Michael J. Fox as Marty McFly, Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia Organa.

But the main feature of the exhibit is a large television screen, mounted in the center of the tableau, which shows videos on a pre-programmed loop. All of Robin's favorite movies are represented, interspersed with video snapshots depicting scenes from Robin's past. In between each film is a short intermission bumper with a catchy jingle directing viewers to go to the lobby and purchase some concessions.

Anyone who wants to learn about Robin and her life will have to sit through the whole recording, start to finish. You don't get to see snippets of her awkward teen crush on amateur crooner Tammy Thompson in sophomore year until you've watched all of Billy Wilder's The Apartment. If you want to witness her adrenaline pumping adventure escaping from a secret underground Russian military base, you'll have to wait until Akira Kurosawa's The Hidden Fortress is finished. And you'll have to wait until the end credits of the 1945 French classic Children of Paradise have finished rolling to watch scenes of Robin and her friends sneaking through an abandoned house to try to ambush and kill a powerful psychic enemy covered in vinelike tentacles.

The final film on display is the seminal 80's teen romp Fast Times at Ridgemont High, but oddly, this movie doesn't play the whole way through. At exactly 53 minutes and 5 seconds into the runtime, the screen displays a shot of heartthrob Phoebe Cates climbing out of a swimming pool in a revealing red bikini. Phoebe reaches up to undo the clasp holding the front of her bikini, and the video freezes, as though someone has pressed the pause button on the remote. This image lingers, framed by jittery VHS artifacts, for a solid two minutes, before the screen goes black. After five minutes of being off, the recording starts again from the top with The Apartment.

CHARACTER INFORMATION
Character Name: Robin Buckley
Age: 18
Canon: Stranger Things
Canon Point: post-Season 4
Character Information: character wiki + history specifically

Personality:
Robin is an avid learner. She is a polyglot, who teaches herself new languages for fun. She plays a game with herself where she will read classic literature once in English, and then read it again in the original language to test how well she’s picked up Italian, French, etc. Her nosy nature and her love of languages is what first got her involved in the Hawkins gang’s shenanigans, in the summer before her senior year. At first, she was content to spend her time making sarcastic, cutting comments about how much Steve sucks— a position she held without actually knowing anything about him other than the fact that he was popular, he was a jock, and he was the guy her first crush was interested in. But as soon as she overheard Steve and Dustin listening to a Russian recording, her intellectual curiosity kicked in, and she made it her mission to not only teach herself Russian but also find out what the secret behind the coded message was. Dustin and Steve were hesitant at first, but she showed them how dedicated she was to the mission, and talked them into letting her help.

Robin is good at talking people into things. After the mall burned down and they could no longer work at Scoops Ahoy, she and Steve applied to get jobs at Family Video instead. The manager, a classmate of theirs named Keith, hired Robin on the spot because of her deep knowledge of and appreciation for film but rejected Steve due to his lack of committed attitude and more pedestrian tastes. (The guy didn’t even remember there was more than one Star Wars movie!) Robin took Keith aside and reminded him that even though Steve was a dingus, he was a total chick magnet, and his popularity among Hawkins’ teenage girls would drive them to the video rental store in droves, thereby persuading Keith to give Steve the job after all.

Months earlier, Robin would have dismissed Steve the same way Keith did, falling prey to the "us versus them" dichotomy of Hawkins high, and the lack of understanding that she (an outcast nerd) had of Steve (a popular jock), and vice versa. She kept herself at arms’ length from Steve (and everyone else), hiding the truth that her resentment of him was fueled by jealousy over her crush only having eyes for him, and not her. It was her usual defense mechanism, after witnessing the horrible things that close-minded Hawkinsites would do to people they suspected of being homosexual, or in any way outside the norm. However, throughout their harrowing experiences over the summer, Robin was able to learn from her misjudgment and come around to see that Steve was actually a great guy, who would go to great lengths not only to help but to protect the people close to him. She confided in him that she was gay, and to her surprise, he was actually chill about it, which further cemented her trust in him. In the ensuing months, she grew to care enough about him that she would go to bat for him against Keith’s initial reservations, using her persuasion skills to Steve’s advantage.

Although she is good at seeking out in-roads to talk people into letting her do things, Robin can be absurdly and awkwardly bad at picking up on social cues. It doesn’t occur to her that Steve has a crush on her until he makes it blatantly, plainly obvious, at which point she turns him down as gently as she can. She doesn’t sugarcoat bad news at all, partly because she is a pessimist, and partly because it doesn’t occur to her to think about how other people might feel to hear every obstacle that lies in their path laid out before them. She plays out how she expects conversations to go ahead of time, such as when the gang was preparing to face Eddie with the news that they had found Vecna. After a brief mention of the good news (they bought him junk food and beer), Robin begins to expound at length and in great detail upon all the bad news, that Vecna is in the Upside Down, the door to which has been closed, leaving them with no way of reaching him, thereby completely screwing over Eddie’s chances at clearing his name. Meanwhile, Nancy, who is much more level-headed and much better at anticipating and intuiting people’s feelings, suggests that they say, “We’re one step closer to finding Vecna,” and leave it at that, so as not to drown Eddie in hopelessness.

As evidenced by the last point, Robin often doesn’t know what to say in sensitive situations, leading her to ramble and spout out every thought that comes to her mind. She can go on tangents, floating from one topic to the next, from discussing their investigation into the murders in Hawkins, to making guesses as to Nancy’s intentions in pursuing Victor Creel as a lead, to begging Nancy to tell her whether she’s pissing her off by running off at the mouth— all the while never ceasing to run off at the mouth. Her motormouth and lack of filter are a self-fulfilling prophecy, a flaw that she is well aware of, and yet seemingly unable or unwilling to do anything about, even though it clearly sets people on edge. She does what she can to relieve the tension with awkward jokes and desperate reassurances before she inevitably gets distracted and goes off in a different direction.

Robin will spill her every waking thought willingly, carelessly, and often, but she doesn’t confide in many people about her inner life, her hopes and dreams. She has hopes and dreams— has many of them, actually, great, lofty ones— but she keeps them close to her chest. While she had close friends in elementary in middle school, they had drifted apart by the time they reached high school. As a sophomore, Robin isolated herself from her marching band friends, instead seeking out the company of a like-minded teacher, Mr. Hauser. She started eating lunch in Mr. Hauser’s classroom instead of in the cafeteria, and they talked about anything and everything, from literature to movies, to Robin’s desire to leave Hawkins and travel to Paris— something she had creatively dubbed "Operation Croissant." Mr. Hauser tried to be a mentor to Robin, encouraging her to let her peers in on her plans so that she wouldn’t be jet-setting alone and unsafe, but the only person she wanted to trust was Mr. Hauser himself. She assumed that because she saw her former friend Barb talking privately with Mr. Hauser shortly before Barb disappeared, Mr. Hauser had helped her run away somehow. In truth, Barb and Mr. Hauser were talking because Barb had uncovered Mr. Hauser’s secret, that he was gay and in a relationship with another man. Robin had been so convinced of what she believed to be true, of the ideal version of events that she had constructed in her mind, that she completely missed the fact that her friend and mentor was the only (other) gay person she had ever met.

Robin’s insatiable curiosity can lead to her asking too many questions at inopportune times, or asking them so incessantly that it drives people away from her. Even Mr. Hauser, who at one point was one of Robin’s closest allies, can be annoyed and put off by her unceasing questions, prying into his social life outside of school hours. Arguably, Robin’s life would have been a whole lot safer (albeit less interesting), had her dogged curiosity not gotten her involved in the Scoops Troop’s investigation into the Russian message. She doesn’t regret it, though, as she had always been dreaming of living a more adventurous life. It’s just that she thought that life of adventure would only be possible outside of Hawkins, and she never envisioned that it would be so dangerous. Still, uncovering the secrets lying beneath Hawkins’ polished exterior has given Robin a purpose and direction in her life that she was sorely lacking.

HISTORY + PERSONALITY In Robin's sophomore year, her favorite teacher was targeted with threatening phone calls (more about that below), and he confessed to Robin that the male "friend" he was seeing Terms of Endearment with at 10pm on a school night was actually more than just a friend. This was the first gay person that Robin had ever met, and the experience helped her realize that she herself was gay.

The summer before her senior year, Robin worked at Scoops Ahoy at the new Starcourt Mall alongside Steve Harrington, who she initially resented and teased for being the popular guy who held her crush's attention. But once she found out that Steve and his younger friend Dustin Henderson had intercepted a secret Russian radio message, she decided to stick her nose into other people's business again and get herself involved. This wouldn't be the first time her nosiness got her caught up in something unusual, but it was a lot more dangerous and a lot more world-saving than her usual fare. After that experience, she and Steve became best friends, and she tagged along with the gang of mystery-solvers the next time something weird went down in Hawkins.

As a sophomore, Robin lived by the philosophy of "you have to do what you need to do to survive within the system, with a healthy dose of "don't bait the monster." (The monster, in this case, being Hawkins' repressed and judgmental society.) All she wanted to do was live life as unremarkably as possible, to fly under the radar until she could escape Hawkins and travel to some faraway place (Paris) and be the person she always wanted to be— the free-spirited rebel that her former-hippie parents once were. Except, when the Hawkins monster targeted her favorite teacher, Mr. Hauser, and she learned that it was because he was gay, she acted against her own philosophy, and stepped up to protect him, framing the student who was sending him threatening phone calls for pulling the fire alarm, which would have gotten him two weeks suspension and ruined his perfect attendance record. She threatened him that if he ever attempted to go after Mr. Hauser again, she would weaponize the Hawkins rumor mill against him.

After this incident, Robin learned a lot more about herself (including that her interest in Tammy Thompson was because she had a crush on her, because guess what, she actually like girls the way she's supposed to like boys), and became more willing to stick her head out for people.

On a surface level, Robin's biggest fears are rabies and earthquakes. These fears make her act rashly, clumsily, taking a back seat and letting other, braver people take the lead whenever possible. But on a deeper level, Robin is afraid of stagnating in her life in Hawkins, rotting away on the inside as she's forced to grow up into some semblance of the stereotypical 1980s housewife. She dreams of escaping, of graduating from Hawkins High and fleeing to Europe, somewhere where she can break free from the bounds placed on her by the rigid and conservative society of her upbringing.

Robin's current goal, in her own world, is to fight alongside her friends, kill Vecna, clear Eddie's name, save Max, save Hawkins, and get out alive. That last part is important. Now, here, in a world outside her own, Robin's goals are to learn more about the multiversal rifts that brought her and her friends here, and find a way to return to her own world, bringing everyone from Hawkins home with her, safe and alive. Again, everyone being alive is the important part. Given that three fifths of the Hawkins people in game are supposed to be dead back home, helping Steve find some way to bring Chrissy, Eddie, and Billy back alive is the number one priority.
ABILITIES SKILLS — Fluent in English, French, Spanish, and Italian. And Pig Latin. Can also pick up other languages easily enough to translate recorded audio provided she has a dictionary on hand. An example of this is Russian. Plays trumpet in marching band. Can also play french horn. Knowledgeable about movies. Skilled researcher and multitasker. Knows how to make improvised weapons such as molotov cocktails. Very persuasive when she wants to be.

BACKING TRACK — When someone is attempting to take an action, i.e. a feat of strength, stamina, speed, intellect, etc., Robin can assist by playing music behind them, either via an instrument or by singing. Robin's music will give them a "do-over," and make them more likely to succeed. Robin can grant this assistance to up to 6 people of her choosing.

In order for Robin's music to assist an ally, they must be able to hear her. The assistance will last until Robin stops playing, either by choice or by force, up to a maximum of ten minutes. The action they are trying to accomplish must be something they are capable of doing without assistance, i.e. she could not help a nonpowered pre-teen lift a car, but she could help an athletic basketball player to make a three point shot. Robin can use this ability twice per day.

IT’S ZORBIN’ TIME — Robin can conjure a human sized inflatable hamster ball, aka a zorb, around herself or one person or creature of her choice. The ball is impenetrable, from the outside or the inside, it always has enough air, and it is neither too hot or too cold. The ball also floats on water, and can be used either as a protective bubble, or as a large, rolling battering ram.

Only one zorb ball can be active at a time. If one zorb is active and she tries to create another one, the first one will disappear. In order to place a target in the zorb, Robin must be able to touch them. The zorb lasts until Robin decides to dismiss it, or until she is incapacitated somehow, up to a maximum of one hour. Robin can use this ability twice per day.

Personality —
Please EITHER (1) Summarize your character's personality — including motivations, behaviors, and psychology — in 300-600 words OR (2) Respond to the questions below.

  • What were your character's most formative experiences?:
    1. In Robin's sophomore year, her favorite teacher was targeted with threatening phone calls (more about that below), and he confessed to Robin that the male "friend" he was seeing Terms of Endearment with at 10pm on a school night was actually more than just a friend. • What values, morals, and/or philosophies does your character live by, and how are those beliefs demonstrated? What happens when they have to compromise what they believe in?
As a sophomore, Robin lived by the philosophy of "you have to do what you need to do to survive within the system, with a healthy dose of "don't bait the monster." (The monster, in this case, being Hawkins' repressed and judgmental society.) All she wanted to do was live life as unremarkably as possible, to fly under the radar until she could escape Hawkins and travel to some faraway place (Paris) and be the person she always wanted to be— the free-spirited rebel that her former-hippie parents once were. • What is your character afraid of? How does avoiding or preventing these fears influence their actions and decisions?
On a surface level, Robin's biggest fears are rabies and earthquakes. These fears make her act rashly, clumsily, taking a back seat and letting other, braver people take the lead whenever possible. But on a deeper level, Robin is afraid of stagnating in her life in Hawkins, rotting away on the inside as she's forced to grow up into some semblance of the stereotypical 1980s housewife. She dreams of escaping, of graduating from Hawkins High and fleeing to Europe, somewhere where she can break free from the bounds placed on her by the rigid and conservative society of her upbringing.

  • What goals does your character have right now? What do they want, and how do they go about getting it?
Robin's current goal, in her own world, is to fight alongside her friends, kill Vecna, clear Eddie's name, save Max, save Hawkins, and get out alive. That last part is important. Now, here, in a world outside her own, Robin's goals are to learn more about the multiversal rifts that brought her and her friends here, and find a way to return to her own world, bringing everyone from Hawkins home with her, safe and alive. • Gameplay —
Areas of Interest / Brainstorming: I'm interested in getting Robin caught up with modern day life and technology, including the great strides that have been made in the LGBTQIA+ community since the 1980s. Bringing her in for Arc 2 of the game will be interesting, given her canon experience with alternate realities and dimensions. For the most part, she works well as a support character, so she's not likely to spearhead any player plots without collaboration, but she is great at teamups and she's actually likely to join up with a guild willingly, as opposed to my other two characters.
