[ Robin answers the call right away, with the tail end of a soft laugh audible as she picks up.
She stays quiet to let Eddie explain, piping up with clarifying questions here and there just to make sure she's following along. But for the most part, she's just happy to listen to Eddie speak. It's always fun to listen to someone talk about something they're passionate about. ]
[ The guys are used to her, will even chime in with commentary of their own or counterpoints just to pick an argument, but there's something really nice about being able to ramble about something you love while your audience prompts you to make sure they're getting it. For a while, while she was getting into the swing of her lecture, she was worried that Robin either didn't care or was getting bored, but then she got swept up in the excitement of being allowed to ramble about her passions and she quickly loses whatever niggling self-conscious feelings were plaguing her. ]
And then — [ she pauses to crack open a beer, a sharp tschsss coming through before she pauses to drink, ] — Castamir besieged the capital Osgiliath, nearly burning it to the ground, which forced Eldacar to flee North to live in exile in Rhovanion.
[ She's paying attention! Eddie's used to talking without really having the people she talks to absorb anything she says, so this is making her feel alarmingly mushy. ]
Yeah, Eldacar was the son of the king, but he was also only half Dúnadan, and at the time the Gondorian people took the lineage of their kings very seriously. So Castamir, who was fully Númenórean, was able to fan the flames of this unrest and use it to drive a wedge politically through the city and wound up overthrowing the throne and forcing his cousin to a life in exile.
[ Eddie huffs out a long sigh, like the political machinations of his long-ago fictional society is something she regularly loses sleep over.
Which she does, honestly, but she is also aware that it's weird of her. ]
I dunno, maybe the hobbits? I mean, they definitely care about your lineage, don't get me wrong, but I think respectability is more of a draw than a good family tree if push comes to shove. Hobbits take that kind of thing very seriously.
[ Robin is hardly in any position to judge someone's thought processes for being weird, given what goes on in her own head. Honestly, it's kind of nice to talk to someone about something other than girls or sports. Not that she doesn't mind talking with Steve about girls... Maybe less so the sports part. Eddie's brand of nerdery isn't the same as Robin's, but they're at least speaking two Romance languages, instead of trying to translate Steve's German into something resembling French. ]
I never thought the characters I identified most with would be the hairy barefoot people, but... I guess outliers have to stick together.

Hey, a Hobbit doesn't reach full adulthood until they're in their thirties and they eat like ten meals a day. I think that sounds great. I don't feel like an adult at all and I love eating.
Not reaching adulthood 'till your thirties is a little different when your average life expectancy is over a century. I don't think any of us will be throwing 111th birthday parties.
